Strength To Your Sword Arm

I was brought up shaking hands. Along with the basic "please" and "thank you," it was considered respectful to offer the right hand and make eye contact when meeting, greeting, or congratulating someone. The way a hand was shaken, we were taught, reveals one’s character.

When I moved to Canada, I found it bizarre that shaking hands, especially among women, is not common. People meeting each other for the first time always say, “Nice to meet you.” A few moments later, they part with: “Nice meeting you.”

Sometimes, I find myself standing in a group of men who shake each others’ hands but offer me nothing more than a nod. Am I less worthy of a handshake because I am a woman?....
